The Mayi Kuwayu Study is a longitudinal study of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, health, and wellbeing, which is led and governed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Over 13,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 16 years and over have participated in the study since it began in 2018.
This webinar will present updated results from a
project using Mayi Kuwayu Study data to track mental health and wellbeing
outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults in the lead-up to the
Voice to Parliament Referendum and the year since. The presentation will look
at how exposure to racism and discrimination has changed in the lead-up to and
since the Referendum, as well as various measures of health, social and emotional
wellbeing, family and community support, and cultural connection. Presenter, Dr
Bronwyn Wilkes is connected to Gundungurra people from the Burragorang Valley
through her paternal grandmother. She is a researcher in the Mayi Kuwayu Study
team at Yardhura Walani, the National Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Wellbeing Research. Her recent research has involved tracking mental
health and wellbeing in the lead-up to and beyond the Voice to Parliament
Referendum, and looking at links between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
language use and wellbeing.
